With the launch of the new Torchlight Infinite season ‘Overrealm,’ players are invited to dive back into XD’s free-to-play action role-playing game (ARPG). This latest update offers a refreshing alternative for those seeking a break from genre heavyweights like Diablo 4, Path of Exile, and Last Epoch. While these titles are known for their spectacle, intricate buildcrafting, and flexible skill systems, Torchlight Infinite stands out with its rapid pace and vibrant gameplay, making it an ideal choice for a quick and exhilarating gaming experience.
Exploring the Overrealm
Season 12, also referred to as SS10 by some, introduces the ‘Overrealm,’ an unstable alternate dimension that players will navigate as they tackle the revamped endgame. The objective is to race against time, delving as deep as possible into this realm to maximize rewards before it collapses, sending players back to their original location. The emphasis on optimizing builds and testing skills is a hallmark of engaging ARPGs, and ‘Overrealm’ promises to deliver on that front.
Similar to Path of Exile’s Atlas, players can customize their rewards from the Overrealm using items like the ‘Bottled Shadow’ and the ‘Containment Dossier.’ This permanent progression system allows for upgrades that enhance gameplay, including extended run times, temporary combat pets, auto-looting features, personal teleporters, and the ability to summon elite monster packs that drop valuable loot.
Innovative Talent System
In this season, XD has revamped its talent system with the introduction of ‘Ethereal Prisms.’ These prisms can be socketed into talent nodes, replacing them with specific bonuses. Players can equip one prism at a time, gaining potent upgrades, and can also utilize an ‘Inverse Image’ prism that amplifies the effects of all talents within its range while removing prerequisite requirements.
The character Bing has received a new hero trait, ‘Creative Genius,’ which transforms his chaotic playstyle into a more tactical spellcasting approach, utilizing the twin resources of Whimsy and Ingenuity. This update also introduces a unique trait system that grants Bing a talent from both sides of the talent pool at levels 45, 60, and 75, paving the way for hybrid builds.
New Gear and Mechanics
As with any new season, ‘Overrealm’ is packed with an array of legendary gear featuring fresh universal mechanics. Players can look forward to buffs such as hasten, fortitude, and aggression effects, while debuffs include frail (increased spell damage taken), torment (amplified damage-over-time), and infiltration (elemental effects that weaken enemies).
The update also introduces ‘combo skills,’ which allow players to execute a series of moves in sequence, rewarding them for successfully completing the entire sequence. For instance, ‘Crescent Slash’ begins with a single energy wave, followed by a flurry of attacks, culminating in a powerful finisher. Players can utilize mobility skills mid-combo without interrupting their flow, although certain abilities will reset the combo.
Building on the success of last season’s Outlaw mechanic, which involved hijacking armored convoys to gain access to a central vault, this feature has been integrated into the core game. Additionally, XD has implemented various tweaks to progression and quality-of-life improvements, such as significantly reduced Ember costs for crafting, unbound mutated legendaries that can now be crafted and traded, and a more responsive Trade House.
