Team Fortress 2 Classic is now Team Fortress 2 Classified, has been delayed to January 30: ‘it wouldn’t be an authentic TF2 experience without a bit of Valve time’

The mod previously known as Team Fortress 2 Classic has undergone a significant transformation, both in name and concept. While the original title suggested a nostalgic return to the game’s early days—characterized by simpler silhouettes and basic weaponry—it has evolved into a reimagining that incorporates cut content and ideas from its initial development phase. This new version introduces an array of features, including an escort mode featuring a playable civilian class, four distinct team modes, jump pads, and an assortment of new weaponry such as the nail gun, dynamite pack, and tranquilizer gun.

Renaming and New Directions

The impetus behind the renaming stems from a request by Valve, which pointed out that the name “Team Fortress 2 Classic” bore too close a resemblance to their own “Team Fortress Classic.” The modding team shared, “We’ve learned that various other mods have recently used the word ‘classic’ in ways that unintentionally made them look like official Valve products, and as a result, Valve had a new policy put in place back in September.”

Finding a suitable new name proved to be a surprisingly challenging endeavor. The team aimed to retain the TF2C abbreviation while also encapsulating the essence of their vision. They noted, “It quickly became apparent that few options actually embodied what we set out to do better than ‘classic’ had. Despite disagreements over what ‘classic’ means, it has historically been a great way for us to set a standard for our mod’s design, and has allowed us to maintain coherency between eras of development.” Ultimately, they settled on the name Team Fortress 2 Classified.

Delay in Release

In conjunction with the renaming, the team announced a delay in the release date. Initially slated for 2025, the launch of Team Fortress 2 Classified has now been postponed to January 30, 2026. The developers cited several reasons for this decision. “The first is that we want a few more weeks of polishing and extensive testing,” they explained. “The second and more important reason is that Steamworks review is a factor that we cannot control. Communication can be slow and inconsistent, and we need padding in our timeline to ensure there are no last-minute delays.”

They emphasized their commitment to delivering a polished experience, stating, “We want this game to be out as much as you do, but we only have one chance to make a first impression, and we need to do it right. Besides, it wouldn’t be an authentic TF2 experience without a bit of Valve time.”
