Epic Games continues to carve out its niche in the competitive PC gaming market, offering a weekly selection of free games that have become a staple for many gamers. This week, however, the company has upped the ante by providing not one, but three titles for players to download and keep.
What’s on Offer
The first title, Arcadegeddon, is a cooperative rogue-like shooter developed by IllFonic and launched in 2023. While it is already available for free, players will receive an added bonus of worth of in-game currency, known as ‘Arccoins’, with their download.
Next up is River City Girls, a beloved side-scrolling beat ’em up that debuted in 2019. This game has garnered a loyal following for its engaging gameplay and vibrant art style.
Lastly, players can enjoy Idle Champions of the Forgotten Realms, a unique clicker game inspired by Dungeons and Dragons. In this title, players assemble parties of DnD characters to battle foes and collect treasure, all while managing character formations and unlocking new heroes. As noted by Jody in a review from 2017, “Idle Champions is a game designed to play itself,” allowing players to earn rewards even while they are away from the game.
Additional Bonuses
Similar to Arcadegeddon, Idle Champions is also free-to-play, making the Epic giveaway particularly generous. Players will receive a variety of additional content, including the Lobita the Guardian Familiar pack, which introduces a friendly canine companion to the game. Furthermore, the giveaway includes a substantial 9,760 Platinum, the premium in-game currency, bringing the total value of these extras to over 0—excluding the worth of River City Girls and Arcadegeddon’s Arccoins.
Strategic Giveaway Approach
While it may seem extravagant to offer such a wealth of free content, Epic’s strategy appears to be paying off. Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, previously explained that this approach has led to increased sales of paid games on the Epic Game Store. He noted, “You might think that this would hurt the sales prospects of games on the Epic Game Store, but developers who give away free games actually see an upsurge in the sale of their paid games on the store, just because their free game raises awareness.”
Looking Ahead
For those eager to see what’s coming next, next week’s free offerings include Botanicula, a whimsical microorganism adventure game from Amanita Design, which has been charming players since its release in 2012.
