The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess finally gets a fan-made PC port, and I can’t wait to see what modders do with the GameCube classic

Fans Bring Twilight Princess to PC and Mobile

In a remarkable feat of dedication and creativity, fans of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess have successfully ported the beloved game to PC and mobile platforms, unlocking a treasure trove of possibilities for modding. The journey began back in 2020 with decompilation efforts focused on the Nintendo GameCube version, culminating in a significant milestone just six months ago. The result of this labor is a PC port named Dusk, which not only functions seamlessly but also impresses with its enhancements.

The Dusk port elevates the gaming experience with features such as:

  • Higher resolutions and uncapped frame rates
  • Gyro aiming options for bow and grapple use
  • Multiple bloom presets and improved shadow details
  • Access to the Wii U version’s free cam and the Wii version’s mirrored mode
  • Achievements and customizable difficulty modifiers

Among the more transformative additions are quality-of-life improvements that allow players to climb ladders more swiftly and skip through text, making the game’s notoriously slow opening sequence a bit more manageable. Additionally, cheats are included that can significantly alter gameplay dynamics.

What truly excites the community, however, is the potential for mods that will emerge from this new platform. The trailer for Dusk hints at the creative possibilities, showcasing custom models that could give Wolf Link a variety of new fur coats or even replace Hylian Link with characters like Linkle or a design from Ocarina of Time.

“So excited to share this with the world,” tweeted modder Taka Rikka. “This wouldn’t have been possible without so many people in the zeldaret / GC decomp community and beyond coming together to dedicate their talent to this. The biggest thanks to all of them.”

Reflecting on the journey, Taka Rikka added, “When we started the decomp project in August 2020, it was hard to imagine ever finishing, much less seeing it be used for a project like this. So many hours of effort were poured into the decomp by many contributors all over the world.” They also hinted at exciting “future updates” on the horizon.

The port of Twilight Princess represents just one of many fan-driven decompilation projects that have emerged recently. Decompiling games involves dissecting their code, paving the way for unofficial ports and preservation tools. This trend has already led to impressive projects, such as the recent adaptation of Sonic Unleashed for PC, showcasing the potential of community-driven initiatives in the gaming world.
