The voice of Lady D and Orin the Red will be back for the next D&D videogame

Baldur’s Gate 3 has elegantly demonstrated that the principles of Dungeons & Dragons, when thoughtfully adapted, can create a captivating framework for a video game RPG. However, it appears that Wizards of the Coast is charting a different course, opting to explore realms beyond this established foundation. Last year, the publisher announced that its internal studio, Invoke, is developing Warlock, a third-person action-adventure title that seems to draw inspiration from the likes of God of War.

While there is potential for Warlock to emerge as a commendable addition to the gaming landscape, it raises questions about Wizards of the Coast’s strategy. The company is likely to eventually partner with a trusted studio for Baldur’s Gate 4, yet in the interim, it seems disinterested in crafting another game akin to its predecessor, albeit without the iconic name.

Insights into Warlock

Details surrounding Warlock remain sparse, but during the D&D keynote at Gen Con, Wizards of the Coast revealed that Maggie Robertson, known for her roles as Lady Dimitrescu in Resident Evil Village and Orin the Red in Baldur’s Gate 3, will voice the protagonist’s patron. In keeping with the warlock archetype, players will derive their powers from a pact with a supernatural benefactor, specifically the witch Tasha, famed for her spell Tasha’s Hideous Laughter. Tasha, an archfey with her own domain, is poised to bestow eldritch abilities upon players, enhancing the mystical allure of the game.

Additionally, Warlock boasts the talents of Tricia Helfer, celebrated for her roles in Battlestar Galactica and as the voice of EDI in the Mass Effect series, among other notable characters. As of now, this is the extent of what we know about Warlock. The gaming community eagerly anticipates its first glimpse of actual gameplay, set to be unveiled at Gamescom, scheduled to take place from August 26–30 in Cologne.
