SEGA Makes Retro Games Free on Mobile, But Support Ending Soon

SEGA has announced that it will soon be pulling support for nearly all of its remaining catalog of mobile ports, including classic Sonic, Crazy Taxi, and Shining Force games. Despite this, the good news is that these games have now been made free for download on Android and iOS.

The announcement was made through an in-game popup in the affected titles, informing players that support for the games will be discontinued. However, players will still be able to play the games offline if they have already downloaded them. This was the case for previous SEGA Forever titles that were removed from the Play Store a few years ago.

The SEGA Forever program, which brought retro SEGA games to mobile devices, was discontinued in late 2023. The last port was added to Android in 2019, and now the company is preparing to end support for the remaining titles.

Here is the list of games that will soon lose support:

  1. Crazy Taxi Classic
  2. Golden Axe Classics (Golden Axe I, II, and III)
  3. Shining Force Classics (Shining Force I, II, and Shining in the Darkness)
  4. Sonic CD Classic
  5. Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Ep. II
  6. Streets of Rage Classic
  7. Streets of Rage 2 Classic
  8. Super Monkey Ball: Sakura Ed.
  9. Virtua Tennis Challenge

While the future of these games on the Google Play Store remains uncertain, players are encouraged to download them now while they are still available for free. It’s a bittersweet moment for fans of these classic titles, as they will soon lose official support but can continue to enjoy them offline.
