Valve Unveils New Gaming Machines
Valve has recently revealed its latest gaming innovations, including the Steam Frame, a virtual reality headset capable of handling both VR and non-VR games. The Steam Frame is not just limited to gaming, as it is also being utilized to bring Android games directly to Steam users.
According to reports from The Verge, Valve is actively supporting and encouraging developers to bring Android apps to the Steam platform. To facilitate this process, Valve will be releasing a developer kit specifically for the Steam Frame, targeting developers who are already familiar with creating Android APKs for apps and VR headsets on Android devices.
“From the user’s perspective, our goal is to make the transition seamless,” explained Valve engineer Jeremy Selan. “Users should be able to access their titles on Steam, download them, and start playing without any hassle. For VR developers looking to publish their content, they can now easily port their mobile VR titles to Steam using the same APKs they are familiar with.”
The integration of Android games into Steam is made possible by the Arm-based Qualcomm Snapdragon chip used in the Steam Frame, allowing for direct app compatibility. This means that Android games and VR apps can be effortlessly accessed and enjoyed on the Steam Frame.
In addition to the Steam Frame, Valve also introduced a new Steam Machine designed to bring PC games to living rooms in a console-like fashion, along with a revamped Steam Controller. While pricing details for the new hardware have not been disclosed yet, hardware engineer Yazan Aldehayyat mentioned in an interview with IGN that the Steam Machine is expected to be competitively priced, offering an affordable alternative to traditional gaming consoles.
“The Steam Machine is positioned to provide a competitive price point with similar features and performance to a PC,” stated Aldehayyat. “We believe it will offer great value to gamers looking for a high-quality gaming experience.”
