‘We are not looking to just maintain’ Elder Scrolls Online, new ZeniMax boss says, but a bunch of updates have been delayed into 2027 and possibly beyond

In a recent update, Nick Giacomini, the newly appointed co-head of ZeniMax Online Studios, addressed the significant changes within the company following the latest round of layoffs at Xbox. While the studio has faced substantial reductions, with over 200 employees affected—including the departure of Giacomini’s predecessor, Joseph Burba—he reassured fans that The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) remains a cornerstone of their operations.

Commitment to Quality Over Deadlines

Giacomini emphasized a shift in focus regarding project timelines. He acknowledged that the recent layoffs have rendered previously set deadlines unfeasible, stating, “Instead of rushing to hit a previously announced deadline, we are giving our teams the runway they need to do things right.” This strategic decision mirrors Xbox’s approach in past studio adjustments, reflecting a commitment to quality and thorough development.

Among the upcoming features, the Class and Combat Refresh and a new Trial are highlighted as particularly intricate projects. Giacomini expressed a desire to ensure these additions meet the high standards expected by the community before their release. “We want to ensure they hit the mark before we put them in your hands,” he noted, reinforcing the studio’s dedication to delivering a polished experience for players.

The studio has experienced a tumultuous period, with notable departures including original TESO director Matt Firor, who played a pivotal role in establishing the studio in 2007. His exit, along with Burba’s, marks a significant transition for ZeniMax Online Studios as it navigates through these challenging times.
