After an impressive three-month run in theaters, Disney’s “Zootopia 2” has achieved a significant milestone, now holding the title of the highest-grossing film at the domestic box office for 2025.
Record-Breaking Success
The much-anticipated animated sequel, which has garnered acclaim and a BAFTA award, reached a remarkable 4 million in domestic earnings as of Tuesday, surpassing the previous record of 3.9 million set by Warner Bros./Legendary’s “A Minecraft Movie.” On a global scale, “Zootopia 2” has amassed an astounding .85 billion, making it the highest-grossing Hollywood animated film to date and placing it second among all animated features, trailing only behind Chengdu Coco’s “Ne Zha 2.”
The journey of Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps commenced during the Thanksgiving weekend, where the film achieved the second-largest extended opening for the holiday, raking in 8.8 million. Following this impressive debut, “Zootopia 2” captured headlines with its record-breaking performance in China, where it became the highest-grossing Hollywood release, accumulating RMB 4.59 billion and ranking seventh among all films in the region.
Even without the contributions from the Chinese market, “Zootopia 2” has outperformed “Moana 2,” which grossed over .05 billion globally in 2024. This accomplishment underscores the enduring strength of the franchise within Disney’s intellectual property portfolio, as it continues to remain in the top 10 of the domestic box office charts after 13 weekends in theaters.
In addition to “Zootopia 2,” Disney has maintained its position as a dominant force in the box office landscape, despite facing challenges with high-profile disappointments such as “Tron: Ares” and “Snow White.” The success of “Zootopia 2” has contributed to a robust 2025 domestic gross list, which includes two other Disney titles in the top four: “Lilo & Stitch” with 3 million and “Avatar: Fire and Ash” with 0 million.
