On Friday evening, June 12, users around the world faced disruptions on Facebook and Messenger, with reports of issues beginning to emerge around 7:45 PM Bangladesh time. Desktop users encountered an error message stating, “Sorry, something went wrong. We’re working on it, and we’ll get it fixed as soon as we can,” while mobile app users found themselves stuck on previously loaded pages.
Attempts to log into Messenger resulted in unexpected logouts, with users greeted by an “Unable to log in” notification. Initially, it appeared that Meta’s other platforms, WhatsApp and Instagram, were functioning without issues. However, as the evening progressed, it became clear that Instagram and Threads were also experiencing their own disruptions, indicating a more widespread outage across Meta’s services. Although the WhatsApp mobile app seemed operational, many users reported difficulties with the web version.
Surge in User Reports
As the situation unfolded, outage monitoring platforms such as Downdetector and Is It Down Right Now faced accessibility issues themselves, overwhelmed by the influx of users seeking updates on Facebook’s status. Despite the growing concerns, Meta, the parent company of Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, had yet to release an official statement regarding the cause of the outage or provide an estimated timeline for resolution.
In an unexpected twist, another social media platform, Snapchat, was also reported to be experiencing outages. By 8:18 PM Bangladesh time, some users began reporting that they regained access to both the web and app versions of Facebook and Messenger, although lingering issues such as difficulty refreshing timelines and occasional lags persisted.
According to the latest data from Downdetector, services began to show signs of recovery around 8:19 PM Bangladesh time, based on user feedback. The peak of reported outages occurred at 7:49 PM, with 2,738 complaints logged, while the first reports surfaced at 7:34 PM with 1,526 complaints. In the United States, the situation was even more pronounced, with a peak of 113,843 reports recorded at approximately 7:55 PM regarding the Facebook outage.
As the night progressed, users across the globe began to report that Facebook, Messenger, and WhatsApp were becoming accessible once again. Instagram also appeared to be largely restored, although some users continued to encounter sporadic issues.
