Messenger Faces Global Disruption
Facebook’s Messenger app has encountered a significant disruption, affecting users worldwide. The issues appear to be prevalent across both the mobile application and the web platform, leaving many unable to connect or send messages. Additionally, users have reported difficulties making calls through the app. Interestingly, the impact seems to be less pronounced in India, with most complaints originating from users in the United States and the United Kingdom.
According to the outage monitoring platform DownDetector, there was a notable increase in user complaints, with over 573 reports from the US and 1,819 from the UK, indicating that nearly 80% of the total issues were related to message-sending failures. In the UK, a staggering 92% of users reported problems sending messages, while 5% faced challenges receiving messages, and 2% struggled to access the app. In the US, 76% of users indicated difficulties sending messages, 19% reported issues with the app, and the remaining 5% encountered problems with the website.
Additional reports highlighted server connection issues, challenges in receiving messages, and various app and website malfunctions. In stark contrast, only nine users in India reported similar issues, all of whom experienced problems receiving messages.
The outage reportedly began around 8:56 PM IST, peaking at approximately 9:15 PM. During this time, members of The Times of India tech team investigated the situation on Messenger and found they were able to send messages and make calls without issue. As of now, Facebook’s parent company, Meta, has not released an official statement regarding the cause of this disruption.
