MeitY Secretary S. Krishnan emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing India’s cybersecurity framework during a recent address. He noted that while rapid digitization has brought numerous advantages, it has simultaneously heightened vulnerabilities for governments, businesses, and citizens alike. “Cybersecurity is one of the most important concerns we need to address,” he stated, highlighting the evolving nature of cyber threats that can target various sectors, including government entities.
Krishnan pointed out that the emergence of platforms like Mythos has unveiled longstanding cybersecurity vulnerabilities that had previously gone unnoticed. This revelation presents an opportunity for the government to address these gaps, reinforcing the importance of cybersecurity as a top priority. He mentioned ongoing discussions with U.S. counterparts, underscoring the necessity of regular cybersecurity exercises and continuous monitoring to safeguard against emerging risks.
Regarding the recent cyber breach involving Tata Electronics, Krishnan confirmed that the government is investigating the incident. Preliminary information suggests that both parties involved are content with the outcome, indicating no significant loss has occurred as a result of the breach.
WhatsApp Username Issue
On the topic of username-based features for messaging platforms, Krishnan revealed that the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is currently reviewing feedback from various platforms. Specifically addressing WhatsApp, he noted that the company has communicated its decision to withhold the rollout of the username feature until further discussions with the government are completed. Additionally, he mentioned that MeitY has received Meta’s response concerning the Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) issue, which is also under examination. Appropriate actions will be taken following a thorough review.
Furthermore, Krishnan indicated that the government is considering the introduction of standardized regulations applicable to all messaging applications, aiming to establish a consistent regulatory framework across the sector.
