Kentucky state police open cadet class 108 applications – The Advocate-Messenger

In a significant move to bolster its ranks, the Kentucky State Police (KSP) has officially opened applications for Cadet Class 108, as announced by Governor Andy Beshear. Aspiring troopers can now submit their applications through the agency’s online portal, marking a new chapter in law enforcement recruitment.

Enhanced Compensation and Training Opportunities

In an effort to attract dedicated individuals to the force, KSP is offering an increased starting salary of ,000 annually for sworn officers. This competitive compensation package also includes the opportunity for 100 hours of overtime, alongside additional federally funded overtime options.

For the first time, cadets will benefit from mileage reimbursement while attending the academy, a move designed to ease the financial burden of training. The revamped 22-week training curriculum promises not only comprehensive law enforcement education but also extended weekend breaks, allowing cadets to return home during their training period. This approach aims to expedite the start of their careers while maintaining the high standards of training that KSP has upheld since its establishment.

“We are building a safer New Kentucky Home because of heroes like our Kentucky State Police troopers and officers,” remarked Governor Beshear. “If you are passionate about protecting communities across our state, join Team Kentucky and together let’s continue moving our Commonwealth forward.”

Comprehensive Training for Future Troopers

Cadets entering the program without prior law enforcement experience will undergo an extensive training regimen, encompassing over 1,000 hours of both classroom instruction and field study. The curriculum covers a wide range of essential topics, including:

  • Constitutional law
  • Juvenile and traffic laws
  • Crisis response
  • Criminal investigations
  • Community relations
  • Weapons use
  • First aid
  • High-speed pursuits
  • Crowd control
  • Hazardous material handling
  • Implicit bias education

Captain Charles Hedgespeth, Recruitment Branch Commander, emphasized the importance of the academy experience, stating, “The Kentucky State Police Academy is more than training. It is where people take the first real step toward a career of purpose, service, and opportunity. With a restructured 22-week academy and the newly offered mileage reimbursement while traveling to and from the academy, we are making it easier for committed applicants to take that first step in answering the call of public service while still holding true to the standards that define the Kentucky State Police.”
