Meta announces global Teen Accounts for Facebook, Messenger

Meta has officially launched its new 13+ Teen Accounts across Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger, marking a significant step in its ongoing commitment to creating a safer online environment for younger users. This rollout, which was promised last year, aims to address concerns surrounding repetitive and potentially harmful content in teen feeds.

In collaboration with the trust and safety firm Alice, formerly known as ActiveFence, Meta has rigorously tested these new settings. The company reported that Instagram accounts set to the default 13+ configuration experienced a remarkable 68% reduction in mature content compared to similar platforms. Furthermore, when mature content did appear, it was found to be less intense than that seen on competing services and in films rated PG-13.

Enhanced Content Moderation

Meta is also exploring methods to limit the prevalence of specific content types on Instagram, particularly those related to nutrition, weightlifting, and coping with anxiety. The company emphasized the importance of balancing such posts with a diverse range of content, rather than allowing them to dominate users’ feeds.

A report released in September by Meta whistleblower Arturo Béjar, in conjunction with Cybersecurity for Democracy, raised concerns about the effectiveness of some of Meta’s core teen safety features, suggesting that they did not function as intended during testing. This prompted Meta to announce a comprehensive overhaul of its Instagram Teen Accounts in October, drawing a parallel between its content restrictions and the guidelines of PG-13 movies. However, this comparison led to controversy, as the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) objected to Meta’s use of the PG-13 designation without authorization. Following a cease and desist order, both parties reached a resolution in March.

In light of ongoing scrutiny surrounding social media’s impact on youth, Meta has reconfigured its teen settings, introducing new features that include enhanced parental supervision tools and global age detection capabilities. This evolution reflects the company’s responsiveness to public concerns and its dedication to fostering a safer digital landscape for younger audiences.
