Meta Deletes Trans and Nonbinary Messenger Themes

In a notable shift, Meta has removed nonbinary and trans-themed options from its Messenger app, coinciding with a controversial update to its community guidelines that permits users to label LGBTQ+ individuals as “mentally ill.” This decision has raised eyebrows and sparked internal dissent within the company.

Messenger, known for its customizable chat window themes, previously offered a variety of options, including popular themes inspired by cultural phenomena such as “Squid Game” and “Minecraft.” Among these, the app featured themes that celebrated the trans and nonbinary communities, adorned with color schemes reflecting the pride flags of these identities. However, these themes have now been discontinued.

While Meta has not provided an official explanation for the removal of these themes, the timing aligns with a broader ideological pivot within the company, seemingly in response to the anticipated policies of the incoming Trump administration. Reports from 404 Media indicate that this shift has led to significant unrest among Meta employees, with many expressing their discontent over the recent changes. Insiders describe the atmosphere as “total chaos,” highlighting the tension surrounding the company’s direction.

The trans theme was first introduced in June 2021, during Pride Month, accompanied by a message that emphasized the importance of authenticity and connection within the LGBTQ+ community. Similarly, the nonbinary theme was launched in June 2022, both of which were celebrated in blog posts that have since been removed from Meta’s online presence. The absence of these posts raises questions about the company’s commitment to supporting these communities.

In the original announcement for the trans theme, Meta encouraged users to “#ConnectWithPride,” underscoring the value of expressing one’s true self. The removal of these themes appears to contradict this sentiment, leaving many to wonder about the future of LGBTQ+ representation within Meta’s platforms.
