Changes to Messenger Desktop Apps
In a significant shift for desktop users, Meta has announced the impending discontinuation of its Messenger applications for both Windows and Mac. Starting December 15, users will need to transition to Facebook’s web platform to continue their messaging experience on a computer.
As the shutdown process unfolds, users can expect to receive in-app notifications regarding the discontinuation. This will provide a 60-day grace period during which the Messenger app can still be utilized before it is permanently retired. However, it is important to note that the mobile version of the Messenger app will continue to be available for users on the go.
For those who wish to preserve their chat history, Meta recommends enabling secure storage prior to the app’s closure. Failing to do so will result in the irreversible loss of past conversations.
Additionally, it is worth mentioning that the Messenger desktop app has already been removed from the Apple App Store. Post-December 15, any attempts to access Messenger on a desktop will redirect users to Facebook.com. For individuals without a Facebook account, the pathway will lead them to Messenger.com instead.
