Meta has embarked on a significant journey to enhance the safety and experience of its younger users by expanding the Teen Accounts feature across Facebook and Messenger. This initiative follows a successful introduction on Instagram a year prior, during which the company reported integrating ‘hundreds of millions of teens’ into these specially designed accounts across its platforms.
Enhanced Safety Features for Young Users
The Teen Accounts are equipped with automatic protections that aim to limit interactions and exposure to potentially harmful content. This move addresses the growing concerns of parents regarding their children’s safety and screen time management. Adam Mosseri, the Head of Instagram, emphasized the importance of these measures, stating, “We want parents to feel good about their teens using social media. We know teens use apps like Instagram to connect with friends and explore their interests, and they should be able to do so without worrying about unsafe or inappropriate experiences.”
To further bolster this commitment, Mosseri highlighted the various enhancements made since the feature’s inception. These include:
- Limits on teens going Live
- Increased restrictions in direct messages (DMs)
- Improved mechanisms to ensure age-appropriate experiences
“Supporting parents and helping teens use our apps safely is a responsibility we take seriously,” he added, reflecting the company’s dedication to creating a secure online environment for its younger audience.
Collaboration with Educational Institutions
In addition to the focus on parental protections, Meta is extending its support to educational institutions through the newly launched School Partnership Program, which is now available to all middle and high schools across the United States. This program empowers educators to report safety concerns, such as bullying, which will be prioritized for review within a 48-hour timeframe.
Having piloted this initiative over the past year, Meta has now made it accessible to schools through a waitlist system introduced earlier this year. This proactive approach not only fosters a safer online community but also strengthens the collaboration between Meta and educational stakeholders, ensuring that the well-being of students remains a top priority.
