Samsung will discontinue its Messages app in July and replace it with Google’s

In a significant shift for its messaging strategy, Samsung has announced the impending discontinuation of its Samsung Messages app, with an official “End of Service Announcement” posted on its website. By July of this year, users will no longer have access to the app, prompting the company to recommend a transition to Google Messages as the new default messaging platform.

Transitioning to Google Messages

For those still utilizing Samsung Messages in the United States, this transition to Google Messages brings a host of enhanced features. Users can now enjoy Rich Communication Services (RCS) messaging, which allows for the transmission of high-quality media, participation in group chats, and real-time typing indicators, regardless of the operating system of the smartphone in use.

While Galaxy smartphone owners may miss some of the unique customization options that Samsung Messages offered, Google Messages compensates with innovative features powered by generative AI from Gemini. This technology enables users to creatively remix their photos within chats, adding a new layer of interaction.

Moreover, Google Messages simplifies the process of switching conversations across devices, whether it be a smartphone, tablet, or smartwatch, enhancing the overall user experience.

This move is not entirely unexpected, as Samsung has been gradually phasing out its own messaging app over the past few years. Starting with the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6, and continuing with the Galaxy S25 series, the company ceased preloading Samsung Messages, opting instead to pre-install Google Messages on its devices.

Although Samsung Messages remains available for download via the Galaxy Store, the company has indicated that the specific final date for the app’s discontinuation will be communicated directly through the app itself in due course.
