Spotify launches in app messaging for one on one chats

Spotify has unveiled an innovative in-app messaging feature that enhances user interaction by enabling one-on-one chats. This new functionality aims to foster a continuous dialogue around shared music and podcasts, enriching the listening experience within the app.

How It Works

To kick off a conversation, users must first establish a connection through shared content. This could be via collaborative playlists, a Jam, a Blend, or participation in a Family or Duo plan. Once a connection is made, the recipient must approve a chat request before the conversation can commence. Additionally, users have the option to send an invite link to their contacts or initiate a chat by accepting a request that comes through a Spotify link on an external platform.

The messaging feature also includes fun elements like emoji reactions, accessible by simply tapping on the user’s profile picture. While Spotify ensures that messages are encrypted both at rest and in transit, it’s important to note that they are not end-to-end encrypted. The platform has committed to actively monitoring messages for any violations of its rules, and users can report messages for further investigation if needed.

User Control and Availability

For those who prefer not to use this feature, it can be easily disabled in the Settings > Privacy and social menu. The rollout of this messaging capability is currently underway on mobile devices, available to both premium and free users aged 16 and older. Initially, the feature is being launched in select markets across Latin and South America, with plans to extend its reach to the U.S., Canada, Brazil, the EU, the U.K., Australia, and New Zealand in the weeks ahead.
