WhatsApp recently experienced a significant service disruption, impacting users’ ability to connect and send messages through both its mobile application and web platform. The situation prompted a surge in user complaints, particularly noted by Downdetector, a service that tracks online platform statuses. In India alone, around 3,000 reports were logged, with over 90% of users indicating issues with message transmission. The remaining complaints primarily revolved around server connection failures and general app malfunctions.
Members of The Times of India’s technology team confirmed they faced similar challenges, struggling to send messages on both the WhatsApp app and WhatsApp Web. On a global scale, approximately 2,800 users reported experiencing issues, with 91% highlighting problems with sending messages, 6% noting app-related issues, and 3% encountering difficulties in receiving messages. Despite the widespread nature of the disruption, Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, has yet to issue an official statement regarding the cause of the outage.
