In the latest iteration of Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2, the Pixel Launcher is undergoing a notable transformation, particularly in its search bar design. This update aligns the search functionality more closely with the aesthetics of the Google app’s revamped homescreen widget.
The redesign features a more compact search bar, which previously included the familiar ‘G’ logo, a voice search microphone, and a Google Lens shortcut. The new layout introduces an AI Mode icon positioned to the right, enhancing the overall organization of the interface. The magnifying glass, adorned with a sparkle and rendered in the four signature Google colors, offers a visually appealing separation from the other icons, which were previously arranged side by side.
All elements are now neatly contained within a darker background, providing a cohesive look that enhances usability. Notably, this redesign does not extend to the top of the app launcher, indicating a focused approach on the search bar itself.
As AI Mode is still in its early stages of rollout, it is anticipated that Google may introduce a simplified version of this redesign, potentially featuring just the search bar within a container. Currently, users have limited options to customize or disable the shortcut associated with the search bar. In contrast, the Google app offers a variety of shortcuts, including Translate (text and camera), Song Search, Weather, Sports, Dictionary, Homework, Finance, Saved, and News, all of which seamlessly integrate with Google Lens and other app functionalities.
At present, the Pixel Launcher search bar redesign is visible on a single device running Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2, following a recent server-side update. Additionally, the new gradient G logo was introduced just yesterday, marking another step in the evolution of the user interface.
As this update continues to unfold, it will be interesting to see how users adapt to these changes and what further enhancements Google may implement in future releases.
