Android Auto 14.0 releases in beta with prep for defrost buttons, Maps alert controls

Google has initiated the rollout of the Android Auto 14.0 update through its beta program, marking a subtle yet significant step in the evolution of its automotive software. While users may not notice any major changes at first glance, the underlying code reveals intriguing developments, particularly concerning temperature control functionalities.

In our analysis of the latest application version, we have decompiled the APK files to uncover potential future features. This process allows us to glimpse various lines of code that hint at enhancements, although it’s important to remember that not all features may ultimately be released, and our interpretations may vary.

Earlier this month, we reported that Android Auto 13.9 introduced new strings suggesting the inclusion of temperature controls as a native feature. Although the exact context for these controls remains unclear, Android Auto 14.0 appears to further this initiative. Notably, the update includes strings for front and rear defrost toggles, although these features are not yet active within the app.

  • FRONT: controldefrostfront
  • REAR: controldefrostrear

Additionally, the latest update hints at an option for users to manage alerts from Maps within Android Auto. This feature specifically addresses incident reports and seems to be paving the way for a new “Alerts” section in the settings menu, which may include a toggle for these notifications.

  • Alerts: ALERTSETTINGSCATEGORY_TITLE
  • Get alerts for reported incidents and other conditions that may impact your drive: NAVIGATIONALERTSETTING

Following feedback regarding the intrusive nature of incident reports on both Android Auto and CarPlay, this toggle could be an effort to enhance user experience. However, with the feature still inactive, its effectiveness remains to be seen.

As for the broader rollout, Android Auto 14.0 is expected to transition to the stable track in the coming weeks, although a precise timeline is elusive. Given the lack of immediately visible user-facing changes, it seems likely that Google is utilizing this update to address ongoing bugs and lay the groundwork for future enhancements.
