Android Auto is on the verge of enhancing its user experience with the potential introduction of customizable driver avatars in Google Maps. This feature, already available in the Google Maps app, is expected to make its way to the Android Auto interface, allowing drivers to personalize their navigation experience further.
Customization Features on the Horizon
Recent discoveries within the latest version of Android Auto have unveiled hidden options that hint at a more tailored display for drivers. One of the standout features in Google Maps is the ability to modify the driving avatar—the small icon that represents your location on the map. While the default avatar is a simple blue arrow, users can currently change the vehicle type and color through the Google Maps settings, adding a personal touch to their navigation.
According to findings from Android Authority, these customization controls are set to be integrated into the in-car interface of Android Auto. This would provide a similar menu to what users experience on their mobile devices, enabling them to adjust their vehicle representation directly from the car’s dashboard. Although these controls are not yet visible to users, they appear to function seamlessly, syncing changes made on either platform.
Historically, Android Auto has been somewhat conservative in rolling out new features, often leaving detailed controls to the mobile app or omitting them altogether. This has led to a perception that the car software has remained static for an extended period. However, the potential for avatar customization signifies a shift towards a more dynamic user interface.
Google’s cautious approach is understandable, as the company aims to minimize distractions while driving. This focus has resulted in a slower evolution of core functions such as media, communication, and mapping, preventing users from becoming overwhelmed by frequent changes. Yet, some popular applications available on Android Auto, like Waze, still fall short of their smartphone counterparts, lacking essential features such as route sharing directly from the car’s screen.
While the avatar customization option appears to be fully developed, the timeline for its public release remains uncertain. As Android Auto continues to evolve, users can anticipate a gradual enhancement of features designed to enrich their driving experience.
