Android Auto will get Spotify Jam and support for video apps and web browsers

Last week, Google unveiled an exciting array of enhancements for Android Auto, signaling a significant evolution in the infotainment experience for drivers and passengers alike. Following the Google I/O developer conference, the tech giant introduced not only the much-anticipated Gemini assistant but also a host of new features aimed at enriching user interaction.

One of the standout updates is the revamped Spotify app, which will benefit from new media app templates designed for developers. Among the innovative features is Spotify Jam, a collaborative tool that allows users to share control of a playlist from their individual devices. This means that anyone with Spotify can join in by simply tapping a new “Jam” icon on the car’s touchscreen and scanning a QR code to contribute songs to the playlist. This inclusive feature stands in contrast to Apple Music’s SharePlay, which requires all participants to own Apple devices. Spotify Jam is expected to roll out in the coming months.

In addition to the Spotify enhancements, Google announced the upcoming integration of Quick Share for vehicles equipped with Google built-in. This feature will enable users to seamlessly add stops to their ongoing Google Maps routes, enhancing navigation efficiency. Furthermore, passkey support is on the horizon, promising an additional layer of security for users.

Google also teased a new light mode theme for Android Auto, although it did not confirm an official rollout in its announcements. This aesthetic update, noted by 9to5Google, has been in development for several years and is anticipated to provide users with a fresh visual experience.

Another noteworthy addition is the introduction of web browsers and video apps to Android Auto, which will be available soon. While gaming apps are already accessible in beta, these new features will be limited to use when the vehicle is parked, ensuring safety while enhancing entertainment options. The browser feature is currently in beta for vehicles with Google built-in, while video apps have already been integrated into this version of the infotainment system. Additionally, support for weather apps has officially transitioned out of beta, further expanding the functionality of Android Auto.
