New Templates Enhance Developer Flexibility
At the recent Google I/O 2025 event, Google unveiled exciting updates aimed at enhancing the flexibility of media app layouts within Android Auto. The introduction of two new templates—SectionedItemTemplate and MediaPlaybackTemplate—marks a significant shift in how developers can present their content.
The SectionedItemTemplate allows developers to create a more organized browsing experience by adding multiple sections to the user interface. For instance, Google showcased a Recent Search section positioned above the Albums section, enabling users to quickly access their most recent media interactions.
In addition, the MediaPlaybackTemplate reimagines the Now Playing screen, offering developers greater control over layout and functionality. During the demonstration, Google illustrated how media playback controls could be repositioned to the left side of the display, diverging from the traditional central layout. This change not only enhances usability but also allows for a more personalized experience.
With these new templates, developers are empowered to refresh their app layouts, introducing innovative features and improved aesthetics. Furthermore, Google is actively working on expanding Android Auto’s capabilities to include support for browser and video applications, alongside a newly demonstrated light theme for the platform.
