Recent findings from an investigation conducted by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) have raised significant concerns regarding user privacy for Android phone owners. The investigation reveals that many applications may be unintentionally sharing users’ location data with advertisers, a practice that could occur without the user’s explicit knowledge.
The crux of the issue lies in certain Software Development Kits (SDKs) provided by advertisers to app developers. These SDKs are designed to help developers monetize their applications, but they often collect location data by default. Consequently, if users grant an app permission to access their location, it may also be sharing that data with third parties, including advertisers, without the user’s awareness.
The EFF’s report highlights a critical point: “Even if users were to grant these apps permission to obtain their location data, they would likely not expect their location data to be shared with third parties.” This lack of transparency can lead to misunderstandings about the extent of data sharing that occurs when permissions are granted to an app, especially when embedded third-party SDKs are involved.
How to stop sharing your location on Android
Fortunately, Android users have the ability to manage their location sharing preferences at any time through the device’s Settings page. To restrict location access:
- Tap on Location.
- Select App location permissions.
- Review your apps individually and choose Don’t Allow or Not Allowed as needed.
For those who prefer a more comprehensive approach, users can disable location sharing across all applications by navigating to the main menu and toggling Use Location to off. However, this blanket setting may also affect apps that require location permissions, such as navigation and weather applications.
