Since the debut of the Samsung Galaxy XR late last year, users have been delving into immersive applications featuring Gemini. Today marks a significant enhancement to this headset experience, as Google rolls out a suite of new features aimed at enriching immersion and streamlining navigation within your physical environment.

Pin your apps anywhere you want

Among the most thrilling aspects of this update is the innovative approach to window management in Android XR. Users can now pin applications directly onto their physical walls, ensuring they remain anchored precisely where desired. This functionality allows for practical applications, such as having a calendar floating beside your office desk or dedicating a wall in your living room to a large virtual streaming screen.

Additionally, Google addresses a common frustration for those who frequently remove their headsets. With this update, when you put the Galaxy XR back on, your previous session is automatically restored. This seamless transition allows users to dive right back into their experience without the hassle of reopening and rearranging windows, making it easier to take brief breaks.

Bringing 2D apps into the 3D world

Another noteworthy enhancement is the introduction of an experimental feature called auto-spatialization. By activating this option in the Labs section of your settings, users can transform traditional 2D applications, games, websites, and YouTube videos into a 3D spatial experience with the press of a button. This feature serves as a clever bridge while developers work on creating native XR experiences.

In terms of native applications, Google reports that the library of software specifically designed for Android XR has more than doubled, now exceeding 100 fully immersive apps. Notable new entries include Trombone Champ: Unflattened and a Paris St. Germain app that allows users to view live soccer matches from a tabletop perspective.

Better hand tracking and enterprise support

The remainder of the update focuses on enhancing user experience and broadening the platform’s capabilities. A new Labs feature will enable users to see their actual physical hands while engaging with virtual content in their home space, replacing the previous white outlines.

Moreover, Google is officially introducing Android Enterprise support to XR, facilitating organizations in deploying these headsets for training and collaboration through management partners like Microsoft Intune and Samsung Knox Manage.

This update is now being rolled out for the Samsung Galaxy XR, promising to elevate the user experience significantly.
