Android’s Desktop Mode gets a handy shortcut to pin your favorite apps to the taskbar

Google is making strides in enhancing Android’s Desktop Mode, which is still in development, by introducing a feature that allows users to pin apps to the taskbar for quick access. This addition is part of the latest Android Canary release and aims to streamline the user experience on devices like the Pixel phone.

New Features in Android’s Desktop Mode

With the recent update, users can now find a “pin to taskbar” option in the context menu of an app within the desktop mode launcher. This simple yet impactful feature enables users to add their favorite applications to the dock, ensuring they can launch them effortlessly even after closing them. Unpinning an app is equally straightforward; users can either drag its icon off the dock or select the “unpin from taskbar” option in the app’s context menu.

This enhancement is a crucial step in Google’s ongoing efforts to position Android as a competitive desktop platform, particularly against established players like the iPad. The addition of the taskbar functionality is a small but significant move toward bridging the gap between Android and traditional desktop operating systems.

Currently, the “pin to taskbar” feature is exclusive to the desktop mode launcher and has not yet been integrated into the standard launcher. This is a notable oversight, especially since the taskbar is also present on many Android tablets and foldable devices. Nevertheless, the introduction of this feature signifies progress in refining the Android desktop experience.

Google has previously indicated plans to merge Chrome OS and Android into a unified platform, a strategy aimed at enhancing Android’s competitiveness against the iPad. To realize this vision, continuous feature additions like the taskbar enhancements will be essential in elevating the Android desktop experience to meet user expectations.

While the feature is currently available in the July Android Canary build, its rollout to Beta or Stable channels remains uncertain. If it appears in the upcoming Android 16 QPR1 Beta 3 update, it may also be included in the stable QPR1 release anticipated for September. If not, users might need to wait for the QPR2 release or beyond to access this functionality.
