F-Droid is the first third-party app store to support Android 15’s app archiving feature

F-Droid is stepping into the spotlight as the first third-party app store to embrace the app archiving feature introduced in Android 15. This innovative capability allows users to reclaim valuable storage space by removing an app’s installation files while retaining its data. Previously, this feature was exclusive to the Google Play Store, but Android 15 has now opened the door for third-party app stores to implement it as a system-level function.

Embracing App Archiving

For those grappling with limited storage on their devices, uninstalling apps may seem like a straightforward solution. However, the inconvenience of losing access to apps that may be needed later can be a significant drawback. Archiving presents a more efficient alternative, enabling users to free up space without permanently deleting their applications. With Android 15, F-Droid has taken the initiative to integrate this functionality, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of third-party app distribution.

F-Droid, known for its extensive collection of open-source applications, offers a unique platform for downloading apps without the constraints of the Google Play Store. While it may not host every popular app, it is a treasure trove of hidden gems crafted by independent developers. The addition of app archiving enhances its appeal, providing users with a more versatile and user-friendly experience.

Recently, Torsten Grote, a maintainer of F-Droid, submitted a patch that adds experimental support for the app archiving feature. This patch was successfully merged and is set to debut in the upcoming 1.22 release. Users will find that archiving and unarchiving apps through F-Droid will function seamlessly, mirroring the experience offered by the Google Play Store. The integration required F-Droid to incorporate code that processes the intent sent by Android 15 when a user interacts with an archived app icon, prompting the app installer to restore it.

With the forthcoming version 1.22, F-Droid will adeptly handle this intent, ensuring that users can effortlessly restore archived applications. Notably, the app archiving feature is compatible with all Android app formats, despite F-Droid primarily distributing apps in APK format.

This development signifies a positive shift for third-party app stores, as they increasingly adopt features that enhance their functionality and user experience. Historically, these platforms have lacked many capabilities available on the Google Play Store. However, in response to growing regulatory scrutiny, Google has been proactive in introducing new APIs within Android, effectively bridging the gap. Recent enhancements include APIs for installing app updates without user confirmation in Android 12, ownership over app updates in Android 14, and now, the ability to archive and unarchive apps in Android 15. Furthermore, Google has extended this feature to third-party launchers, allowing applications like Niagara Launcher to support app archiving as well.
