Facing trouble logging into X? You’re not alone

What you need to know

  • X users face login issues due to a verification loop affecting both app and website access.
  • YubiKey re-enrollment required by November 10 prompts access issues for some users.
  • Despite reports, most users remain unaffected as X engineers work to restore service.

Earlier today, a segment of X (the platform formerly known as Twitter) users encountered login challenges that have sparked considerable discussion across various forums, including Reddit. Many reported being ensnared in a frustrating cycle of account verification, where attempts to confirm their identity via phone number, email, or code generator app were met with repeated failures. Users noted that the platform either could not send the required verification codes or did not accept the codes they provided.

Additionally, some users were greeted with a prompt stating, “You must re-enroll your YubiKey. It’ll just take a few minutes to re-enroll. Re-enrolling your YubiKey will associate it with x.com, allowing us to retire the Twitter domain.” This message has added to the confusion, particularly as reports from DownDetector.com indicated a spike in issues around 1:30 PM ET, particularly affecting users in the US and Canada. Colleagues from Windows Central have corroborated the YubiKey concerns, while TechRadar speculated that the ongoing transition to a new domain might be contributing to the complications surrounding two-factor authentication (2FA).

Fortunately, the outage does not appear to be widespread; the majority of users can still access the social media platform without incident. Sources close to the situation have indicated that X’s engineering team is actively working to revert recent changes, suggesting that normal service should be restored shortly.

For those who still have access to their accounts but have not yet re-enrolled for their 2FA key, the process is straightforward. Users can navigate to Settings and privacy on the X website or app, proceed to Security and account access, and select Security. From there, they should choose Two-factor authentication and opt for the Security key option. It is worth noting that X has yet to officially acknowledge the ongoing outage.
