Files by Google is also getting a fresh coat of Material 3 Expressive (APK teardown)

Google is currently in the testing phase of its Files app, integrating the new Material 3 Expressive components into a beta version. This design overhaul is part of a broader trend as Google and various third-party applications prepare to embrace Android’s latest UX design language. While the full rollout of Material 3 Expressive is anticipated later this year, the design is expected to make its debut with the Android 16 QPR1 beta.

Design Enhancements in the Beta Version

The latest beta version, Files by Google v1.7528, showcases several noteworthy changes. A significant alteration is the repositioning of the Quick Share and File Scanner floating action buttons (FABs), which have transitioned from a right-aligned position at the bottom to a more centralized location. This new arrangement not only enhances accessibility but also presents a cleaner, more uniform aesthetic.

In addition to the button redesign, users will notice larger thumbnails for recent files, although this change has sparked some debate regarding its visual appeal. The app’s image viewer has also received a similar treatment, with the Edit and Circle to Search FABs adopting the new design philosophy.

Further adjustments can be observed in the sidebar, where padding and sizing have been modified. However, the intent behind these changes remains somewhat ambiguous, leaving users to speculate on their permanence.

Another significant update is the progress bar’s redesign. Previously located at the bottom of the screen during APK installations or file compressions, the progress bar will now be repositioned to the center, featuring a wavy design that adds a touch of dynamism to the user experience.

As these features are still under development, it is important to note that they may not be present in the final public release. Google continues to refine these elements, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
