Gemini will come to Wear OS as an app update [APK Insight]

Google has officially announced that its Gemini platform will be taking over the role of Assistant on Wear OS devices, a transition first hinted at last month. This change is set to roll out as a straightforward app update, ensuring a seamless experience for users.

Transitioning to Gemini

Initial indications of Gemini’s replacement of Google Assistant emerged back in January, with the latest version of the Assistant app (version 1.18.x) on Wear OS revealing numerous strings related to Gemini. This suggests that the integration is well underway and poised for launch.

Users will find that activating Gemini on their watches will remain familiar; they can do so by either holding down the side button or using the “Hey Google” hotword when the watch is fully awake. The transition promises to maintain the ease of use that users have come to expect.

  • Gemini is now on your watch
  • Get started with Gemini: Speak naturally and get more done with a personal AI assistant on your watch
  • “You’re using Gemini on your phone and now it’s the assistant on your watch. To talk to Gemini, hold down the side button, or just say “Hey Google,” if you’ve turned on that setting.”

The capabilities of Gemini appear to mirror those of Google Assistant, allowing users to set alarms, timers, and message contacts. However, it remains uncertain whether Gemini will extend its functionality to more advanced features such as integration with Gmail or Google Maps. Users will also see a familiar warning: “Gemini can make mistakes, including about people, so double-check it.”

Location and Voice Match settings will remain unchanged, and the Wear OS Tile feature, which allows users to pin two commands or actions, will continue to be available. The At a Glance feature is also expected to stay the same, providing a consistent user experience.

As for the timeline of Gemini’s launch on Wear OS, speculation suggests that Google may be waiting for the debut of a flagship watch to coincide with this significant update.
