Google has made strides in enhancing its Gemini app by introducing the Deep Research tool, which was previously confined to the web. This feature, designed to facilitate in-depth research, is now accessible to users on Android devices, marking a significant step towards mobile usability.
Deep Research Tool Overview
Initially launched late last year, the Deep Research tool allows Gemini users to generate comprehensive reports in a matter of minutes. According to reports from 9to5Google, the rollout of this feature on Android appears to be gradual, with only select users currently able to access it.
To utilize this tool, Gemini Advanced users must select the “1.5 Pro with Deep Research” option from the app’s menu. Once activated, users can input their queries and receive an outline of the report that will be generated. This outline can be customized before initiating the research process, which involves Google scouring the web for relevant information. The resulting report includes sourced references, enhancing its credibility.
Google indicates that the report generation typically takes between five to ten minutes, although more complex inquiries may require additional time. Users can conveniently leave the chat interface and receive a notification once their report is ready, a feature that is also mirrored in the Gemini app.
Feedback on the Deep Research tool has been mixed. One user, Mitja Rutnik, expressed that while the tool excels with broader topics such as interior design and AI chatbots, it struggles with more specific requests, like generating daily stock market reports.
In a competitive landscape, Google is not alone in offering such capabilities. OpenAI recently unveiled its own Deep Research feature, powered by the OpenAI o3 model, which promises to deliver comprehensive reports within a 30-minute timeframe. This development highlights the growing trend of integrating advanced research tools into mobile applications, catering to the needs of users seeking efficient information gathering.
