Google is set to enhance the user experience for video applications on Android Automotive by introducing a feature that allows seamless switching between video and audio modes while the vehicle is in motion. This development comes in tandem with Google’s plans to extend video app support to Android Auto, the platform that integrates smartphone functionality with car displays.
Currently, video apps on Android Automotive are restricted to use only when the vehicle is parked. This limitation, while ensuring safety, can hinder the enjoyment of certain content types. For instance, video podcasts and live sports events often benefit from visual elements, yet they can still be appreciated in audio form.
In a recent developer video, Google elaborated on the new feature, stating:
“We’re also enabling audio while driving experiences for video apps on cars with Google built-in. You can now implement seamless transitions from parked video playback to audio-only listening while driving. Suppose you’re streaming a live sports event while getting curbside pickup. Now, you can continue listening to the audio when you start to drive again.”
This functionality is currently available through an early access program, specifically for vehicles operating on Android 14 and above via the Android Automotive OS. However, app developers will need to manually integrate this feature into their applications.
The implications of this update are significant, particularly as Google has also announced that it will soon support video applications on Android Auto. This suggests that the new audio functionality could potentially extend to the phone-based platform, enhancing the overall multimedia experience for users.
As anticipation builds, users and developers alike are left waiting for the rollout of these features. The prospect of richer app functionality within vehicles is on the horizon, promising an exciting evolution in how we engage with content while on the road.
