Google is quietly making the Pixel Launcher faster with a new shortcut

Google is enhancing the Pixel Launcher with a subtle yet impactful upgrade aimed at streamlining app access for users. Following a limited testing phase, this feature is now being rolled out to a broader audience, promising to make the app-launching experience more efficient.

New Functionality for Pixel Users

As highlighted by users on Android Authority’s Discord channel, Pixel device owners can now launch applications by simply typing a portion of the app’s name and pressing the Enter key on their keyboard. This improvement eliminates the need to tap on the app icon from the search results, thereby expediting the process.

In the previous iteration of the Pixel Launcher, when users searched for an app, the top result would display the desired application. However, pressing the bottom-right button on the keyboard would trigger a Google Search instead of launching the app. With the latest update, this button transforms into an arrow or Enter key when an app match is detected, allowing users to open the app instantly with a single keystroke.

This enhancement not only simplifies the app-launching process but also improves one-handed usability by reducing the number of taps required and keeping the interaction focused on the keyboard. Such a change reflects Google’s ongoing commitment to refining user experience.

Interestingly, this functionality is reminiscent of earlier versions of the Pixel Launcher, which allowed similar behavior before it was removed in late 2022. Google had briefly tested a restoration of this feature in 2023, but that initiative did not progress beyond a limited rollout. Current user reports suggest that Google is now fully embracing this change.

The rollout appears to be server-side, meaning it is not tied to a specific app update. While some users are already experiencing the new functionality, others, including those using the Pixel 10 Pro XL with the stable Android 16 QPR2 update, have yet to see it. This gradual rollout is typical of Google’s approach, and many are hopeful for widespread availability in the near future.
