Google Play now allows Android apps to use other billing systems in the US

In a significant shift for the Android ecosystem, Google has been compelled by a recent court ruling to modify its Play Store policies in the United States. Effective October 29, developers are now permitted to utilize alternative billing systems for their applications, a move that marks a departure from the long-standing requirement to use Google Play Billing services.

As communicated to developers via an email obtained by 9to5Google, this change introduces two pivotal adjustments to the way Android apps can operate within the Play Store.

Key Changes to Billing Policies

  • Enhanced Communication: Google will no longer restrict developers from informing users about alternative pricing and availability options for their apps outside the Play Store. This includes the ability to provide links for downloading apps or processing transactions outside of Google’s ecosystem.
  • Flexible Payment Options: Developers are now free to implement their own payment systems for in-app transactions, or they may choose to continue using Google Play Billing. Notably, developers can offer lower prices within their apps for users who opt for alternative payment methods.

Google has clarified these updates in a detailed support page, emphasizing that developers are no longer required to adhere to the previous billing mandates. The company has also indicated that further changes will be announced in the near future, suggesting a continued evolution of its policies in response to the legal landscape.

This ruling stems from a protracted legal dispute between Google and Epic Games, with the courts siding with Epic. The implications of this decision extend beyond billing practices, as Google is now restricted from engaging in certain exclusivity agreements with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and app developers.

As the Android ecosystem adapts to these new regulations, the landscape for app developers and users alike is poised for transformation, potentially fostering a more competitive environment in the mobile application market.
