According to a recent analysis by app intelligence provider Appfigures, the Google Play Store has experienced a significant decline in the number of available apps since the beginning of 2024. Initially boasting a robust collection of 3.4 million apps, the marketplace has seen this figure plummet to approximately 1.8 million, marking a striking loss of nearly 47% of its offerings.
Among the apps removed, the “games” category faced the most substantial cuts, with 200,000 titles disappearing from the platform. The education sector was not far behind, losing around 160,700 apps, while the business category saw a reduction of 115,400 apps. This substantial pruning has raised eyebrows, but Google asserts that these changes are beneficial for users.
A spokesperson for Google emphasized that this initiative reflects the company’s dedication to enhancing the quality of apps available on the platform. “This reflects the company’s focus on delivering high-quality apps and commitment to continuous improvements for user safety,” the spokesperson conveyed to The Verge.
The motivation behind this extensive removal stems from a concerted effort to combat rampant ad fraud that had plagued the platform. Users were reportedly downloading “vapor apps,” which masqueraded as legitimate popular applications. These deceptive apps generated recurring advertisements, complicating the deletion process for users and lining the pockets of fraudsters. The fallout from this issue affected over 56 million downloads across 180 different apps, necessitating a drastic response from Google.
In light of these challenges, Google has implemented new policies aimed at tracking, detecting, and removing spammy applications. These measures include an expanded set of verification requirements, mandatory app testing, and enhanced human reviews to identify apps that attempt to mislead or defraud users. As noted by TechCrunch, Google is committed to making it increasingly difficult for malicious actors to operate undetected, thereby safeguarding both businesses and users alike.
