The Play Store has introduced a new feature that enhances the app installation experience for Android users. This week, the functionality known as “auto-open when ready” is being rolled out, allowing users to automatically launch newly downloaded applications as soon as they are fully installed.
Upon initiating an app download, a toggle for this feature appears beneath the installation progress bar, although it is turned off by default. When enabled, the app will not immediately open upon installation. Instead, users will receive a notification accompanied by a 5-second countdown, providing a brief window to cancel the auto-open if desired. This can be particularly beneficial for larger applications, such as games, which may take longer to download.
The practical applications of this feature are evident for users who download apps for travel, dining, or other immediate needs. It allows them to engage with other tasks while waiting for the app to install, reducing the likelihood of forgetting about the newly acquired application—a common scenario for many users.
Reports indicate that this functionality is currently active on devices such as the Galaxy Z Fold 7, with other users also beginning to experience it. Interestingly, a slightly different user interface for the same toggle was observed on an older Pixel 9 Pro XL, where it appeared exclusively for games.
