Google to Make Sideloaded Android Apps Safer with Developer Verification

In a significant move to enhance security for Android users, Google is set to introduce a new layer of protection for those who opt to download apps from sources outside the Play Store. This initiative, which will commence its phased rollout in September 2026, aims to address the inherent risks associated with sideloading applications.

Google will verify developers who share Android apps outside the Play Store

While the Google Play Store boasts millions of applications, it often lacks certain niche offerings due to the stringent approval process that developers must navigate. As a result, many developers choose to distribute their apps as APK files, allowing users to install them directly on their devices. However, this practice can expose users to potential malware threats.

To mitigate these risks, Google has announced that it will implement a verification process for developers distributing apps outside the Play Store. According to a recent blog post, the company stated, “To better protect users from repeat bad actors spreading malware and scams, we’re adding another layer of security to make installing apps safer for everyone: developer verification.”

Under the new requirements, all Android applications will need to originate from verified developers, thereby complicating the efforts of malicious entities to proliferate harmful software after the removal of a previous app. It is important to note that this verification process will solely confirm the identity of the developer without reviewing the content of their applications.

The initial rollout will target users in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand, with plans to expand the verification process to additional regions in 2027. To assist developers in adapting to these changes, Google will launch an early access program in October 2025. This program will provide participants with access to an exclusive community forum, priority support, and a platform to share feedback. The program will be available to all developers starting in March 2026.
