Google to Warn Users About Battery-Draining Apps, Plans Red Labels on Play Store by 2026

Google is set to enhance its Android ecosystem by introducing a proactive alert system aimed at identifying battery-draining applications. This initiative, which will roll out by March 2026, promises to empower users with greater control over their device’s battery life while fostering transparency regarding app behavior.

For many Android users, the challenge of pinpointing which applications are responsible for excessive battery drain has been a persistent issue, particularly when devices are idle. A common tactic employed by some apps is the use of “wake locks,” which keep the CPU active for background tasks. While this feature is essential for certain applications, such as music players or file downloaders, it has often been misused by poorly optimized software, preventing devices from entering a true sleep state.

To address this concern, Google has developed a new performance metric known as “excessive partial wake locks.” Following months of beta testing, this system will monitor applications that keep the CPU awake for prolonged periods without justifiable reasons. Specifically, any app that maintains more than two hours of non-exempt wake locks within a 24-hour period—across at least 5 percent of user sessions over 28 days—will be flagged for poor battery performance.

This data-driven approach will analyze app behavior across millions of Android devices, allowing Google to detect patterns of excessive battery usage in real-world scenarios. When such behavior is identified, users will receive clear warnings regarding the problematic app, eliminating the guesswork that has long plagued Android users.

Beginning March 1, 2026, Google plans to escalate these warnings by introducing red battery alerts on app listings within the Google Play Store. Affected apps will display a notification stating: “This app may use more battery than expected due to high background activity.” This initiative represents a significant shift in user empowerment, as individuals will no longer have to rely on trial and error to determine which apps are draining their battery overnight. Instead, this crucial information will be readily available prior to installation, simplifying the process of avoiding problematic applications.

Furthermore, developers of battery-hogging apps will face repercussions beyond user distrust. Google has indicated that such applications may experience diminished visibility in Play Store recommendations and trending lists. In essence, developers who neglect to optimize their apps risk losing both downloads and discoverability.

Notably, Google collaborated with Samsung to build this system, utilizing data from Galaxy and Pixel devices to enhance its accuracy. This partnership ensures that legitimate background processes—such as message syncing or widget refreshing—are not mistakenly flagged as battery offenders.

For everyday users, this feature promises a more efficient Android experience. By identifying power-hungry apps upfront, users can choose to limit background usage, adjust optimization settings, or uninstall the app entirely.
