Google has reintroduced its beloved Androidify app, now enhanced with artificial intelligence to craft personalized Android Bot avatars based on user photos or text prompts. This revival taps into the capabilities of Google’s Gemini 2.5 Flash and Imagen AI models, allowing for a more tailored avatar creation experience than ever before.
Originally launched in 2011, the Androidify app allowed users to customize their own version of the Android mascot, adjusting skin tone, clothing, hair type, and accessories. However, the app was removed from the Play Store in 2020 after a four-year hiatus. At Google I/O earlier this year, the tech giant announced its plans to bring back Androidify, now equipped with advanced AI features to enhance personalization.
To create your custom Android Bot, simply open the app and tap the “Let’s Go” button. Users can either upload a photo or enter a text prompt, and even select a color for their Bot. For those unsure about crafting a prompt, the app offers a “Help me write” feature, utilizing AI to generate suggestions. Once ready, users can tap “Transform” and watch as the AI brings their vision to life.
How does Androidify work?
The creation process varies depending on whether a user opts for a text prompt or an image. When using a text prompt, the app validates it through Firebase’s AI Logic SDK before generating the image with a specialized version of the Imagen model tailored for Androidify. If users choose the “Help me write” option, the app employs the Gemini 2.5 Flash model to create a random description of the Bot’s attire and hairstyle, which is then processed by the Imagen model.
For photo uploads, the app analyzes the image using Gemini 2.5 Flash to generate a detailed description of the individual, capturing key attributes such as hair, clothing, and accessories. This analysis ensures that the resulting Bot accurately reflects the user’s likeness while adhering to brand safety protocols, which include blurring text and omitting identifiable features like logos and facial expressions.
Once the Bot is generated, users can customize it further by selecting from various backgrounds, ranging from simple designs to themed options like “Music lover” or “Gamer.” The app also allows users to resize their creations for different formats, including wallpapers and stickers, and offers a sharing feature to easily distribute the final product.
The Androidify app is available for free on the Google Play Store and can also be accessed via the web. Additionally, every Friday, users can create an 8-second video of their Android Bot using the Veo 3 model, adding another layer of creativity to the experience.
For developers interested in the technology behind Androidify, the app showcases modern tools such as Jetpack Compose for its user interface, CameraX for photo capture, and the Gemini API for accessing advanced AI models.
