In a significant move to enhance user security, Google is rolling out a suite of new features for Android devices, collectively branded under “Theft Detection.” This initiative aims to bolster the protection of user data and sensitive information, particularly in light of rising concerns over device theft.
- The centerpiece of this rollout is the “Theft Detection Lock,” an innovative AI-powered lock screen designed to detect suspicious motion that resembles someone snatching your device and fleeing. When activated, this feature will automatically lock the phone, providing an immediate layer of security.
- Another notable addition is the “Remote Lock” feature, which allows users to lock their devices remotely. To utilize this function, users must provide their phone number and complete a security challenge, ensuring that only authorized individuals can access the device. This feature is compatible with devices running Android 10 and newer.
- Completing the trio is “Offline Lock,” which secures the device against unauthorized access if it has been taken offline for an extended period. If a thief attempts to disable the device’s connectivity, they will be locked out, especially if they fail to guess the password multiple times.
These features were first hinted at during Google’s I/O 2024 event and have begun to appear on devices globally, including reports from users in India, Germany, and the EU, as well as the U.S. While many users are experiencing the full suite of features, some regions may not yet have access to all three, indicating a phased rollout by Google.

In addition to these theft protection measures, Google is also working on “Private Spaces,” a feature set to debut in Android 15. This function will allow users to create a secure area on their devices, similar to a Safe Folder, where they can store apps containing sensitive information, such as banking or health-related applications, protected by a unique PIN. Furthermore, Google is exploring enhancements to safeguard one-time passwords and expand the software’s Restricted Settings, reinforcing its commitment to user security.
