Samsung Messages offers a plethora of features that Google Messages seems to overlook, particularly in terms of customization and organization. The ability to automatically delete old messages is a standout feature. However, despite these advantages, Google Messages remains my preferred messaging app for several compelling reasons. Its seamless integration allows me to switch between Android devices effortlessly, and the Messages for Web functionality enables me to communicate from my computer with ease.
Swipe Gestures: A Customization Opportunity
One of the more perplexing aspects of Google Messages is the default configuration of swipe gestures. Both the left and right swipes are set to archive messages, which seems counterintuitive. Fortunately, Google has provided users with the option to customize these gestures, allowing for a more tailored experience. Personally, I have adjusted my settings so that swiping left marks a message as read or unread, while swiping right sends it to the bin. Here’s how you can make these adjustments:
- Tap the profile icon located in the top-right corner and select Messages settings.
- Scroll down to find Swipe actions.
- Tap the Customize button next to the gesture you wish to change, and select your desired action from the pop-up menu.
- Repeat the process for the other swipe gesture.
Smart Reply Suggestions: A More Thoughtful Approach
Google Messages also features Smart Reply suggestions, which provide quick, context-aware responses to incoming messages. While this can be convenient, the immediate sending of these suggestions can sometimes lead to awkward exchanges, as they often come across as overly simplistic or robotic. To enhance this functionality, you can modify the tap behavior for Smart Replies:
- Open Messages, tap the profile icon in the top-right corner, and select Messages settings.
- Scroll down to Suggestions and actions > Suggestions.
- Select Tap to edit.
Ensure that the Smart Replies option is enabled. With this adjustment, tapping a suggestion will populate the text field, allowing you to edit the message before sending it.
Additional Customizations for a Personalized Experience
Beyond swipe gestures and Smart Reply settings, I have fine-tuned several other aspects of Google Messages to better suit my preferences. For instance, I’ve disabled the Show expressive animations feature to eliminate full-screen reaction animations, and I’ve turned off Hear outgoing and incoming message sounds to reduce in-app sound effects. Additionally, I adjust the text size according to my phone’s screen dimensions to maximize the number of messages displayed.
While Google Messages may not be flawless, addressing these two significant issues has certainly enhanced my overall experience, making it more enjoyable than ever before.
