In the realm of Android Auto, the process of sideloading apps can often feel like navigating a labyrinth. The intricacies of permissions vary not only by device but also by the apps themselves, which can sometimes prove to be unreliable. Users frequently encounter issues with platforms like Android Auto Apps Download (AAAD), which may go offline unexpectedly, leaving enthusiasts in a lurch. However, amidst these challenges, a handful of sideloaded applications have emerged as genuinely beneficial, enhancing the in-car infotainment experience. Noteworthy examples include AABrowser, which enables internet browsing, and CarStream, a basic application for watching YouTube—though it’s advisable to use such apps only when parked. Despite the hurdles in getting these apps operational, many users find the effort rewarding.

Recently, I discovered an alternative sideloading method for Android Auto that allows me to bypass AAAD entirely, a welcome relief considering the premium version’s cost. This method ensures that app icons appear directly in the vehicle’s infotainment system launcher.

Unveiling a New Sideloading Method

This sideloading technique proved effective on my Pixel 10 Pro, which operates on Android 17 without being rooted. While it may function on other Android devices, results can vary, and the steps may differ slightly based on the specific device in use. With Google’s Android Developer Verification initiative and a more complex sideloading process on the horizon for unverified developers, this method may only remain viable for a limited time.

Enabling Developer Modes

To begin, I activated Android’s Developer Mode on my Pixel 10 Pro, allowing the installation of apps from unknown sources. Here’s a brief overview of the steps taken:

  • Open the Settings app on your Android device.
  • Select About Phone.
  • Navigate to Software Information.
  • Locate the Build Number and tap it seven times consecutively.
  • If successful, a notification will confirm that Developer Mode is Enabled.

Next, I turned on Android Auto’s Developer Mode, granting access to various developer options:

  • Open the Settings app on your Android phone.
  • Go to Connected Devices.
  • Select Android Auto (you may need to tap Connection Preferences first).
  • Scroll down and tap Version until Developer Settings are enabled.

Understanding the Unknown Sources Setting

It’s crucial to ensure that apps are installed from safe sources, especially in the often murky waters of Android sideloading. I typically download Android Auto apps directly from reputable GitHub repositories that boast positive community feedback and a substantial number of stars and watchers. However, it’s important to note that this sideloading method isn’t infallible. Recent updates to Android Auto have been known to remove sideloaded apps from the platform’s launcher, particularly those that circumvent Google’s restrictions, such as screen mirroring or video playback applications.

Nevertheless, when it functions as intended, this method streamlines the installation of sideloaded Android Auto apps. After completing the initial steps, I enabled the Unknown Sources option within Android Auto’s developer settings:

  1. Open the Settings app on your Android device.
  2. Navigate to Connected Devices and then Connection Preferences.
  3. Scroll to Android Auto, tap the Three Dots in the top-right corner, and select Developer Settings.
  4. Scroll down to Unknown Sources and check the box next to it.

With these settings adjusted, I proceeded to use AABrowser as an example. After locating the official GitHub repository for the Android Auto web browser, I downloaded the appropriate file, installed it, and granted the necessary permissions. Upon completion, AABrowser appeared instantly in my Android Auto under Customize Launcher and on my vehicle’s infotainment system.
