Google is currently in the testing phase of an innovative addition to its Contacts app: the Pixel VIPs widget. This new feature aims to streamline communication with your most important contacts by consolidating essential information into a single, user-friendly interface.
Features of the Pixel VIPs Widget
The Pixel VIPs widget is designed to enhance user experience by displaying a variety of information for up to eight selected contacts. Users can expect to see:
- Recent calls and messages, including those from third-party apps like WhatsApp.
- Real-time location updates.
- Birthday reminders.
- A notes section for personalized reminders.
- A “Things to do together” section, although details on its functionality are still under wraps.
This widget, sized at 4×1, will be easily accessible on the home screen, allowing users to click on a contact to view their profile, which includes vital details such as last interactions and location updates. The integration of local weather and time information adds an extra layer of convenience.
To set up the Pixel VIPs widget, users will navigate to the Contacts app, select the Organize tab, and tap on Pixel VIPs. After granting the necessary permissions, they can choose their VIPs and add the widget to their home screen.
While the feature is still in development, an introduction video from the Pixel Tips app hints at its potential. The presence of paw print icons suggests that this is a “dogfood” build, indicating internal testing. A public release may coincide with the upcoming Android 16 QPR1 update, making it a highly anticipated addition for Pixel users.
The Pixel VIPs widget not only promises to enhance connectivity with key contacts but also opens the door for future enhancements. Users are hopeful for additional features, such as a “Feed” widget that could proactively display upcoming birthdays and reminders, further simplifying the management of personal relationships.
