Spotify has unveiled an exciting update to its Android Auto app, introducing a fresh design and enhanced features aimed at elevating the in-car music experience. Among the standout additions is the much-anticipated “Jam” feature, which was first teased during Google I/O 2025.
Collaborative Listening Takes Center Stage
The latest update, version 9.0.58.596 for Android, empowers drivers to host shared playback sessions directly from their vehicle’s display. The “Jam” feature allows passengers to effortlessly join in by scanning a QR code, enabling them to contribute tracks to the music queue in real time. While the host maintains full control over playback and guest management, this feature is designed to foster a more interactive atmosphere during road trips and group drives. As Spotify aptly stated in a recent press release, “This makes collaborative listening seamless while on the move.” The company had hinted at deeper integrations with Android Auto back in May, and this update clearly fulfills that promise.
Enhanced Usability for On-the-Go Music Lovers
In addition to the social aspects, the update brings practical enhancements, particularly for users navigating areas with limited connectivity. A newly added “Downloaded” tab prominently features within the in-app Library, simplifying the process of locating music available offline. Tracks that have already been downloaded are now clearly marked while browsing playlists or albums, eliminating the guesswork for users without a signal.
Moreover, Spotify has introduced a floating Search button that opens a dedicated search screen, a functionality that was previously absent in Android Auto. Until now, users relied solely on Google Assistant for music searches, which would initiate playback immediately without displaying results. With this update, users can now browse and select tracks manually, mirroring the experience of the mobile app.
Streamlined Interface for Safer Navigation
The update also features significant UI improvements, offering a more streamlined interface that promotes safer navigation while driving. This marks the first major indication of Google’s recently announced plans to provide media apps with greater flexibility within Android Auto. Notably, Google has confirmed that Amazon Music and YouTube Music will soon adopt these enhanced capabilities, with similar updates anticipated for other media applications in the near future.
The Spotify update is currently live on the Google Play Store and is being rolled out gradually to eligible users, promising a more engaging and user-friendly experience for music lovers on the road.
