The Apple TV app is finally available on Android with Apple TV Plus

What you need to know

The Apple TV app has officially made its debut on Android devices, marking a significant milestone for Apple as it expands its streaming service accessibility. As of today, Android users can seamlessly download the Apple TV app from the Google Play Store, eliminating the need for a web browser to enjoy Apple TV Plus content.

  • With the introduction of Google Play Billing, Android users can now subscribe to Apple TV Plus directly through the Google Play Store, without the necessity of owning an Apple device. This enhancement also extends to those using Android TV or Google TV apps.
  • It’s important to note that the Apple TV app for Android is tailored for accessing Apple TV Plus and the MLS Season Pass, but it does not support access to purchased iTunes content.

After more than five years since the launch of Apple TV Plus, the arrival of the Apple TV app on Android is a welcome development. Users with devices running Android 10 or newer—be it phones, tablets, or foldables—can now enjoy a curated selection of content, including Apple TV Plus and MLS Season Pass subscriptions. This follows Apple’s earlier release of the Apple TV app for Android TV and Google TV platforms in 2021.

While the app is designed to provide a user-friendly experience, it does come with some limitations compared to its Apple counterpart. Notably, features such as access to iTunes content and Apple TV channels are absent. The app is primarily focused on delivering Apple’s streaming services.

In a notable shift, the Apple TV app now supports Google Play Billing, allowing users to sign up for Apple TV Plus directly within the app. This is a first for Apple, as previous iterations of the app on Android and Google TV did not offer in-app subscription capabilities.

Apple emphasizes that the app is crafted for the Android experience, boasting a “familiar and intuitive interface.” However, some features that long-time Android users may expect are currently missing. For instance, Google Cast functionality is not available at launch, preventing users from casting content from their Android devices to Google TV, Nest, or Chromecast. Apple has indicated plans to enhance the app over time, with Google Cast being a potential future addition.

The Apple TV app for Android provides access to two primary streaming services: Apple TV Plus, which includes popular shows such as Severance and Ted Lasso, and the MLS Season Pass. Apple TV Plus is priced at .99 per month and features Friday Night Baseball, showcasing two MLB games weekly without regional blackouts. The MLS Season Pass, offering comprehensive coverage of Major League Soccer, is available for .99 per month or for the entire season.

Android users can now download the Apple TV app from the Google Play Store, a development that had been anticipated since rumors surfaced last October. For those curious about the offerings, Apple TV Plus provides a seven-day free trial, inviting users to explore its content without commitment.
