Tired of repeating AI prompts? Chrome’s new feature handles it for you

What you need to know

  • Chrome’s new Skills feature saves any AI prompt as a one-click tool.
  • Save your best prompts directly from your chat history and trigger them via a forward slash (/) or the plus (+) button.
  • Skills can run on your current page while simultaneously pulling data from other open tabs to aggregate information.

For those who find themselves repeatedly typing commands like “make this recipe vegan” or “summarize this PDF,” Google has introduced a solution. The latest enhancement to Chrome, aptly named Skills, transforms these monotonous tasks into streamlined, one-click actions.

Previously, utilizing Gemini within Chrome often required users to start from scratch each time they navigated to a new site. A prompt that worked seamlessly on one page would necessitate a complete reconfiguration on another. With the advent of Skills, this inconvenience is significantly alleviated.

When using the Gemini sidebar, the AI can now apply your saved prompt to the page you are currently viewing, while also having the capability to gather data from other open tabs, creating a more cohesive experience.

Importantly, the system prioritizes user consent, ensuring that any significant actions—such as adding events to your calendar or sending emails—are always subject to your approval. Additionally, automated checks and updates are in place to maintain optimal performance.

This update is currently accessible to a select group of users, specifically those on Chrome desktop with their language set to English-US. If you are signed in, your saved Skills will be synchronized across all your desktop devices. To manage your Skills, simply type the forward slash (/) and click the compass icon to access your dashboard.

Android Central’s Take

The introduction of Skills appears to be the productivity enhancement many have been anticipating. The ability to bypass the customary “Dear Gemini, please pretend you’re a nutritionist…” preamble and directly access macro counts is a significant time-saver. However, one might ponder whether Google is merely providing us with a macro recorder because we struggle to recall three sentences. While these one-click workflows empower users, they also hint at a future where we might rely too heavily on our browsers to do the cognitive heavy lifting for us.
