Your Android Automotive dashboard just got a lot more fun with these new apps

Google has taken a significant step forward in enhancing the in-car experience with the introduction of a multitude of new applications for Android Automotive. This initiative aims to enrich the entertainment options available to drivers and passengers in vehicles equipped with Google built-in technology.

Expanding the App Ecosystem

Last year, Google hinted at a substantial expansion of its app offerings for Android Automotive, and it has now delivered on that promise. The rollout of dozens of new applications begins this week, allowing users in supported vehicles to enjoy a broader selection of entertainment options—albeit only while the vehicle is parked.

Unlike Android Auto, which necessitates a connection to a smartphone and is currently compatible with over 200 million vehicles, Android Automotive operates directly on the car’s infotainment system. This means that applications are pre-installed, providing seamless access to essential Google services such as Google Maps and Google Assistant without the need for a mobile device.

Previously, the range of applications available on Android Automotive was somewhat limited, which deterred developers from creating versions of their services for this platform. However, with the launch of the new program, Google is revitalizing the dashboard experience by introducing a variety of entertainment and news applications, including popular names like Plex, F1 TV, and NBC News, alongside engaging games such as Roblox and Farm Heroes Saga.

Car-Ready Mobile Apps Program

This initiative, known as the “car-ready mobile apps program,” involves a meticulous review of the Google Play Store to identify applications that are already optimized for larger displays, such as tablets. If these applications are deemed safe for use in parked vehicles, Google will facilitate their distribution through the Play Store available in cars running Android Automotive.

Beginning this week, drivers of select Volvo and Polestar models will have the opportunity to download a variety of new applications from the Google Play Store directly within their vehicles. This selection includes a mix of streaming services and light games, ideal for those moments spent at charging stations or while waiting to pick up passengers.
