What you need to know
- YouTube now allows users to set Shorts usage to zero minutes, effectively limiting access from the main home feed.
- The new setting can be found under Time management and introduces a barrier by blocking the Shorts tab once the limit is reached.
- While Shorts are not entirely removed, they remain accessible in subscriptions and through shared links.
YouTube has taken a significant step in addressing user concerns about the overwhelming presence of Shorts on its platform. The company has introduced a feature that allows users to limit their engagement with Shorts, a move that many have been eagerly anticipating. Previously, YouTube had announced a time limit feature for Shorts, which was set to range from 15 minutes to two hours. However, the latest update now includes an option to set this limit to zero minutes, effectively allowing users to turn off Shorts entirely.
This new functionality, confirmed by The Verge, is currently being rolled out across the platform. Initially available for parents, the ‘zero minutes’ timer is now extending to all users, providing a much-needed respite from the incessant scrolling through Shorts.
To activate this setting, users can navigate to the YouTube app’s settings by tapping the profile icon located in the bottom right corner, followed by the Settings (gear icon) in the top right. From there, they should select Time management settings and set a daily limit for Shorts. Upon enabling this feature, a prompt will guide users to choose their desired duration, including the newly added option of zero minutes.
Once the limit is set to zero minutes, attempting to access the Shorts tab will trigger a pop-up notification indicating that the user has reached their limit, offering options to either return or disregard the message. While this feature does not eliminate Shorts from the app entirely, it introduces a layer of friction that may help users break the habit of mindless scrolling.
It is important to note that Shorts will still be visible in the subscriptions feed and can be accessed through direct links. This adjustment primarily impacts the Shorts tab on the home page, allowing users to regain control over their viewing experience. As this feature continues to roll out, users can expect to see it on their devices shortly.
